There Are Jobs…But You Do Have to ‘Work’ To Find Them

Finding your next career opportunity in a rural region and smaller communities can be challenging. There are fewer employers with large staff numbers to focus in on, word of mouth is a time-honoured way of communicating job openings, and there is low unemployment meaning job supply and demand tends to be in balance.

To get you started on your journey, here are some helpful places to begin your search.
In general, labour shortages are most acute in the service and hospitality sectors. Skilled labour has high demand with specific employers in the region particularly in periods of economic growth in the province.

Job seekers should scan local and regional newspapers for current job opportunities.

Chambers of Commerce can be helpful in exploring opportunities in the business community.  Many Chamber websites have member directories which can be useful if you want to contact a potential employer directly.

Alberta Employment and Immigration offices
located in Claresholm, Crowsnest Pass, and Pincher Creek have information related to education, student finance employment, career planning, and self employment.

Several employers in the Town of Cardston and Cardston County utilize the Latter Day Saints Employment job bank to advertise employment opportunities

Employers also use word of mouth to advertise openings. Job seekers should talk directly with employers, employees, town officials and other residents to find out what opportunities may be available.

Some employers use external signage on their storefronts and office windows. Job seekers should tour the business and industrial districts.

In Waterton Lakes National Park, some employers post job openings at the post office and the Parks Canada office.

Alberta SouthWest’s economy has an agricultural emphasis. Agricultural Employment Alberta Ltd. assists job seekers in finding agricultural employment in the region

Alberta Health Services is a significant employer in the Region.

Public education is a significant employer in the Region
The Livingstone Range School Division operates at total of nine elementary and six high schools in the communities of Stavely, Granum, Nanton, Claresholm, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Lundbreck and the Crowsnest Pass and 12 Hutterite Colony Schools.

The Westwind School Division operates seven elementary and five high schools in the communities of Hill Spring, Glenwood, Mountain View, Cardston, McGrath, Raymond and Sterling and 19 Hutterite Colony Schools
