EV Charging Network

Regional Electric Vehicle Charging Station Network

Started in 2016,  three southern Alberta Regional Economic Development Alliances (REDAs) along with the City of Calgary and City of Lethbridge are collaborating to develop a regional electric vehicle charging station network. This network would connect communities south of Calgary and compliment an initiative in the East Kootenays, called Accelerate Kootenays, which is deploying 53 charging stations throughout the East and West Kootenays. There is also planned EV charging deployment planned in Montana. The southern Alberta network would provide Level 2 and Level 3 charging along Highways 1, 2, 3, and 22 in the initial phase.

The largest tourism markets for the Southern Region is Calgary and Lethbridge and this electric vehicle charging network is seen as another tourism amenity to help increase economic activity in our communities. Range anxiety is one of the known barriers to greater adoption of electric vehicles and this network would be a big step towards minimizing it.

The five partner organizations are working with the Community Energy Association (CEA) to assist in educating the members of their organizations and source necessary funding. They hope to have funding secured by the second half of 2018.
