Heads and Tails

The Waterton River emerges from its namesake lakes and flows northeast to its merger with the Belly River south of Fort Macleod.

The river's headwaters can be fished within Waterton Lakes National Park north of the junction of Highways 5 and 6. Park at the Maskinonge Lake picnic area and angle downstream to the park's northern boundary. A National Park fishing permit is required in addition to an Alberta sports fishing licence.

The second access is via Secondary Highway 505 at Waterton Reservoir. A sharp turn at the dam's western end leads to the bottom of the spillway. Fish the tailwater from the broad gravel banks.
